Mexican coffee at Under the Volcano

My week-long birthday celebration continued with a family dinner at Under the Volcano in London.

We don't eat out often, but when we do I like to go somewhere safe. My definition of "safe" is "somewhere I've been before" or "somewhere that's been recommended by someone I trust."

Under the Volcano was recommended to us by my mother-in-law, who's a fan of their corn chowder. Mrs. TasteBuddy and I have been there on two other occasions. I love the cinnamon coffee and Lori likes 'most everything else.

We experimented more this time. I think our party of ten sampled most of the appetizers and we shared several entrees after that. I had a chance to try several dishes, including the Coyote Bites (stuffed jalapeno peppers) and the nachos.

Did I mention the coffee? The staff swears there's no magic recipe -- it's just good, strong coffee plus cinnamon -- but I know there's something secret in the brew that makes me crave it days later. I've tried making it at home, and come close but no cigar. (Now that I think about it, I have to go back again.)

My fondness for Under the Volcano may have as much or more to do with the company as it does with the food, but we had a fun evening together, and enjoyed our birthday feast.

Next stop on the birthday tour: homemade ribs, chicken wings and beer.
