After writing so enthusiastically about Stewart's ginger beer the other day, I got thinking about some of the other ginger beers I like.
Before trying Stewart's, my favourite was President's Choice ginger beer. It's not too sweet, and very good. It has a bit of a harshness to its finish, but it's better than average. The price is right, too -- a two litre bottle costs about a dollar.
My friend Jessey, who's from Kenya, usually buys Old Jamaican ginger beer. I know he's offered me some before, for some reason I never tried it (or I did and it didn't make an impression).
While shopping this week, I noticed Old Jamaican on a grocery shelf next to Ting, one of my favourite drinks. Ting is a great grapefruit-flavoured pop I've always liked. Turns out Old Jamaican is made by the same people.
So I gave it a try. It's pretty great. It's sweet and good, not as harsh as the PC stuff. Maybe a little too sweet for some, but I liked it.
Not better than Stewart's, but less expensive, and easier to find. So here's to Old Jamaican.
